A Mature Hairline: What It Is, Causes, & How To Deal With It

During puberty, men experience changes in their bodies. This includes breaking the voice, growth of the pubic hair, wet dreams, and acne, to mention a few. What you may be unfamiliar with is that as men grow older, they start developing a mature hairline due to hair loss.

A normal hairline, also known as the juvenile hairline, is even across the forehead and rounded at the corners.  However, as you age, you may notice that your hairline starts to change.

What Is A Mature Hairline

A mature hairline refers to when your hairline moves back an inch from where it used to be. The mature hairline is often v-shaped, and it starts to develop at the age of 17 and 29 years.

To tell whether you have a mature hairline, you should wrinkle your face, and when you realize that your hairline is an inch above the top wrinkle, it could mean that you have a mature hairline.

However, the development of a mature hairline can be alarming for most men as it could signal the onset of baldness. If you are developing baldness, your hairline will be M-shaped instead of the usual V shape.

But it is no secret that most men do not appreciate the sudden unevenness in their hairlines; therefore, they look for ways to deal with it. Here’s a guide on how you can deal with a mature hairline.

What Causes Hairline Changes or Hair Loss

When you look into a mirror, you may realize that your hairline is uneven, and you may wonder why. The following are some of the reasons for an uneven hairline:

Genetics

As you age, you may realize that some of your hair starts to fall off, which can be alarming. The sudden hair loss could mean that you are going bald.

Baldness is hereditary. Therefore, if the men in your family were bald, then the chances you could be bald are high, which could be the reason for an uneven hairline.

Lifestyle

Your lifestyle can result in a change in your hairline. For instance, if you are a smoker, hair loss chances are high, contributing to the change in your hairline.

Hair Transplant

A hair transplant helps to increase hair in a part of your head that may be bald or an area where hair is thinning out. However, if the transplant is not correctly done, it could result in having an uneven hairline.

Medications

Some medicine may cause sudden hair loss, which could result in changes in your hairline. For instance, if you are a cancer patient and undergo chemotherapy, the medicine could react to your body, causing sudden hair loss.

Dihydrotestosterone Hormone

At puberty, the male body starts to produce hormones such as the dihydrotestosterone hormone (DHT). This hormone’s level is responsible for a man’s hairline, as it binds to the hair follicles and can cause hair to fall off or shrink.

If the level of DHT is too high, it triggers a mature hairline development and possible male pattern baldness.

How To Deal With A Mature Hairline

What can you do once you realize that you have developed a mature hairline? The following are practical tips to help you deal with your new hairline

1.     Accept it

Having a mature hairline is typical for men. As earlier established, once a man hits puberty, the body starts to produce DHT,  the hormone responsible for the mature hairline’s onset.

And since mature hairline development is a sign of growth in men, you can decide to embrace and live with it. A mature hairline is not a sign that you are going bald; therefore, you can choose to get into terms with the new body development just as you did with the growth of pubic hair and breaking the voice during puberty.

2.     Eat healthily

The development of a mature hairline can be a result of hair loss. Therefore, your meals must include nutrients that can help strengthen your hair.

For instance, you should ensure that you include proteins, vitamin b3, and vitamin c, to mention a few in your daily diet.

3.     Change your hairstyle

Although a mature hairline is normal, you may have difficulty accepting it and feel uncomfortable. The new hairline is frustrating because it may not suit your favorite haircut. Therefore, you could decide to change your hairstyle to hide the hairline and feel better about yourself.

However, it would help if you were keen on the hairstyle you choose. A perfect hairstyle should take into account the shape of your face. Therefore, you can consult your hairstylist or a barber to help you pick a suitable hairstyle for you.

4.     Hair transplant

You may decide that you want your juvenile hairline back, especially when you have trouble letting go of your favorite hairstyle. All hope is not lost.

Thanks to advancements in technology, you could deal with a mature hairline by opting for a hair transplant. During the transplant, hair can be removed from any part of your scalp and then fixed on the mature hairline. This way, you claim your juvenile hairline back.

The downside about a hair transplant is that it can be costly; therefore, you may not afford it.

5.     Use finasteride

The DHT hormone contributes to most cases of mature hairline development. However, the use of finasteride pill blocks testosterone’s conversion into DHT hormones, therefore, protecting your hairline.

If you regularly use the medication, you can stop worrying about male pattern baldness as the oral medication encourages new hair growth.

Summary

When you look good, you feel good. Now, a perfect hairstyle is a cherry on the top of a fabulous outfit.

However, the hairline determines the choice of a hairstyle, especially if you have a mature hairline. Therefore, you should familiarize yourself with your hairline and know how to deal with it for a confident you!
